Who pays and how to start
To start a Michigan PIP claim with USAA, report the crash through USAA’s claims channels, then send USAA its written application for no-fault benefits. Under Michigan’s priority rules, USAA usually pays your PIP benefits if it insures you, your spouse or a relative who lives with you. Fault does not decide which company pays. See which insurer pays.
Court opinions name United Services Automobile Association and USAA Casualty Insurance Company.
How to report a claim to USAA
USAA’s auto claims support page says to use the “Report an auto claim” option on usaa.com or in the USAA Mobile App. To start, have the date and location of the crash, the number of vehicles involved, and basic details about what happened. You can add drivers, passengers, witnesses and the other driver’s insurance later.

Michigan steps that apply to every insurer
- Application for benefits. Complete and return the insurer’s application. It gives the written notice MCL 500.3145 requires: your name and address, and the time, place and nature of the injury. See no-fault forms.
- Wage and household forms. Send employer wage verification and disability slips for wage loss, and daily logs for replacement services.
- Reasonable proof. Under MCL 500.3142, PIP benefits are overdue if not paid within 30 days after the insurer receives reasonable proof of the fact and amount of the loss. Overdue benefits earn 12% interest a year.
- One-year rules. Give written notice within one year of the crash unless the insurer has already paid. A lawsuit recovers only losses incurred in the year before it is filed, with that period tolled from a specific claim until the insurer formally denies it. Use the deadline calculator.
If payments stop, read what to do when benefits are denied.
Michigan appellate decisions involving USAA
These are no-fault decisions in which a USAA company was a party. Each one turned on its own facts and issues. Unpublished Court of Appeals opinions are not binding precedent under MCR 7.215(C)(1).
- Andary v USAA Casualty Insurance Co, Michigan Supreme Court, July 31, 2023 (published). The 2019 limits on attendant care and fee-schedule payments in MCL 500.3157(7) and (10) do not reduce benefits for people injured before the amendments while covered by policies issued before them.
- Pirgu v United Services Automobile Association, Michigan Supreme Court, June 6, 2016 (published). A trial court setting a reasonable attorney fee under MCL 500.3148(1) must start with a reasonable hourly rate times reasonable hours, then adjust using listed factors and explain its reasoning on the record.
- Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital v Esurance Property and Casualty Insurance Co, Michigan Court of Appeals, March 2, 2026 (published). After a higher-priority $250,000 policy limit was exhausted, a provider could recover from a lower-priority USAA policy with unlimited coverage under MCL 500.3114(5).

Questions people ask us
Do I file my PIP claim with USAA if the other driver was at fault?
Usually you claim PIP from your own insurer, or your spouse’s or a resident relative’s, whoever caused the crash. USAA pays only if it is first in priority under MCL 500.3114. A claim against the at-fault driver for pain and suffering is a separate claim.
What happens if USAA does not pay within 30 days?
Benefits not paid within 30 days after USAA receives reasonable proof are overdue and earn 12% interest a year under MCL 500.3142. If a court finds the delay or refusal unreasonable, MCL 500.3148 lets it award attorney fees as well.
What information does USAA ask for to start an auto claim?
USAA’s auto claims page asks for the date and location of the crash, how many vehicles were involved, and basic details about what happened. Names of drivers, passengers and witnesses and the other driver’s insurance can be added later.
