Making a Michigan no-fault claim with State Farm

Report the crash on State Farm’s official claims page, then send State Farm its written application for no-fault benefits within one year. Here is how each step works in Michigan.

Who pays and how to start

To start a Michigan PIP claim with State Farm, report the crash through State Farm’s claims channels, then send State Farm its written application for no-fault benefits. Under Michigan’s priority rules, State Farm usually pays your PIP benefits if it insures you, your spouse or a relative who lives with you. Fault does not decide which company pays. See which insurer pays.

Court opinions usually name the company as State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company.

How to report a claim to State Farm

State Farm’s claims page offers these options:

  • Online. Use the “File a claim” link on the claims page.
  • Mobile app. The page says the app lets you file, check status, upload photos and documents, and set up direct deposit.
  • Phone. The page says you can file an auto claim by phone. It does not list the number, so use the contact details on your policy documents or in the app.

Official claims page: www.statefarm.com/claims. Reporting the crash opens a claim number. It does not replace the written application for benefits.

Michigan steps that apply to every insurer

  1. Application for benefits. Complete and return the insurer’s application. It gives the written notice MCL 500.3145 requires: your name and address, and the time, place and nature of the injury. See no-fault forms.
  2. Wage and household forms. Send employer wage verification and disability slips for wage loss, and daily logs for replacement services.
  3. Reasonable proof. Under MCL 500.3142, PIP benefits are overdue if not paid within 30 days after the insurer receives reasonable proof of the fact and amount of the loss. Overdue benefits earn 12% interest a year.
  4. One-year rules. Give written notice within one year of the crash unless the insurer has already paid. A lawsuit recovers only losses incurred in the year before it is filed, with that period tolled from a specific claim until the insurer formally denies it. Use the deadline calculator.

If payments stop, read what to do when benefits are denied.

Michigan appellate decisions involving State Farm

These are no-fault decisions in which a State Farm company was a party. Each one turned on its own facts and issues. Unpublished Court of Appeals opinions are not binding precedent under MCR 7.215(C)(1).

  • Covenant Medical Center, Inc v State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co, Michigan Supreme Court, May 25, 2017 (published). Health care providers had no statutory cause of action to sue a no-fault insurer directly for PIP benefits. The Legislature later amended MCL 500.3112 to give providers a direct claim for treatment after June 11, 2019.
  • Hodge v State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co, Michigan Supreme Court, June 6, 2016 (published). A district court’s jurisdiction over a no-fault suit is measured by the amount demanded in the complaint, not by the proofs at trial.
  • Campbell v State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co, Michigan Court of Appeals, January 15, 2026 (unpublished). The court reversed and ordered summary disposition for State Farm, holding that Auto Club Insurance Association, as the insurer of the vehicle’s owner and operator, was responsible for the plaintiff’s no-fault benefits.
  • Reid v Ellout, Michigan Court of Appeals, April 15, 2026 (unpublished). In the plaintiff’s PIP claim against State Farm, the court affirmed the judgment, penalty interest and attorney fee award, and vacated the costs award with instructions to reduce it to $3,768.40.

Questions people ask us

Do I file my PIP claim with State Farm if the other driver was at fault?

Usually you claim PIP from your own insurer, or your spouse’s or a resident relative’s, whoever caused the crash. State Farm pays only if it is first in priority under MCL 500.3114. A claim against the at-fault driver for pain and suffering is a separate claim.

What happens if State Farm does not pay within 30 days?

Benefits not paid within 30 days after State Farm receives reasonable proof are overdue and earn 12% interest a year under MCL 500.3142. If a court finds the delay or refusal unreasonable, MCL 500.3148 lets it award attorney fees as well.

Can I send my no-fault paperwork through the State Farm app?

State Farm’s claims page says its app lets you upload photos and documents and check claim status. Keep your own copy of every form you send and note the date, because the 30-day payment clock runs from when the insurer receives reasonable proof.
