Who pays and how to start
To start a Michigan PIP claim with AAA, report the crash through AAA’s claims channels, then send AAA its written application for no-fault benefits. Under Michigan’s priority rules, AAA usually pays your PIP benefits if it insures you, your spouse or a relative who lives with you. Fault does not decide which company pays. See which insurer pays.
AAA insurance in Michigan is provided through The Auto Club Group. Court opinions often name the insurer as Auto Club Insurance Association.
How to report a claim to AAA
The Auto Club Group’s claim services page describes these options:
- Online. Use the Auto link on the claim services page.
- AAA Accident Assist. The page says Accident Assist can start your claim after a crash and help arrange roadside service, repairs and a rental.
- Mail. The page lists The Auto Club Group, Claim Department, PO Box 8082, Royal Oak, MI 48068-9823 for injury claims, and PO Box 8001, Royal Oak, MI 48068-9826 for auto and home claims. The page asks you to include the adjuster’s name and claim number.
Official claims page: acg.aaa.com/insurance/claim-services.html. Reporting the crash opens a claim number. It does not replace the written application for benefits.
Michigan steps that apply to every insurer
- Application for benefits. Complete and return the insurer’s application. It gives the written notice MCL 500.3145 requires: your name and address, and the time, place and nature of the injury. See no-fault forms.
- Wage and household forms. Send employer wage verification and disability slips for wage loss, and daily logs for replacement services.
- Reasonable proof. Under MCL 500.3142, PIP benefits are overdue if not paid within 30 days after the insurer receives reasonable proof of the fact and amount of the loss. Overdue benefits earn 12% interest a year.
- One-year rules. Give written notice within one year of the crash unless the insurer has already paid. A lawsuit recovers only losses incurred in the year before it is filed, with that period tolled from a specific claim until the insurer formally denies it. Use the deadline calculator.
If payments stop, read what to do when benefits are denied.
Michigan appellate decisions involving AAA
These are no-fault decisions in which an AAA company was a party. Each one turned on its own facts and issues. Unpublished Court of Appeals opinions are not binding precedent under MCR 7.215(C)(1).
- Devillers v Auto Club Insurance Association, Michigan Supreme Court, July 29, 2005 (published). The one-year-back rule in MCL 500.3145 cannot be extended by judicial tolling, overruling Lewis v DAIIE. The 2019 amendments later added a statutory tolling period while a specific claim is pending.
- Precision Surgical Associates, PC v Auto Club Insurance Association, Michigan Court of Appeals, April 27, 2026 (unpublished). The trial court had to apply the full Medicare payment methodology required by Favot v Brown when calculating the fee-schedule limit under MCL 500.3157, and fact questions remained about the amounts owed.
- Campbell v State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co, Michigan Court of Appeals, January 15, 2026 (unpublished). Auto Club Insurance Association, as the insurer of the vehicle’s owner and operator, was held responsible for the plaintiff’s no-fault benefits ahead of State Farm.

Questions people ask us
Do I file my PIP claim with AAA if the other driver was at fault?
Usually you claim PIP from your own insurer, or your spouse’s or a resident relative’s, whoever caused the crash. AAA pays only if it is first in priority under MCL 500.3114. A claim against the at-fault driver for pain and suffering is a separate claim.
What happens if AAA does not pay within 30 days?
Benefits not paid within 30 days after AAA receives reasonable proof are overdue and earn 12% interest a year under MCL 500.3142. If a court finds the delay or refusal unreasonable, MCL 500.3148 lets it award attorney fees as well.
Where do I mail no-fault forms to AAA?
